You know when you go up to the nail polish sections in stores and they have these special plastic nail things that show what each colour looks like so you can "try" them on, without actually painting your nail? (If that wasn't the most roundabout way of explaining what a nail swatch was, I don't know what is...).
ANYWAY. I'm the sort of person who owns waaaaaay too many nail polishes (like almost every female I know basically) and sometimes I can't decide what colour to use #firstworldbeautybloggerproblems. And CBF painting my nails in case I don't like the colour and I either have to live with the commitment I've made (this seems way more dramatic than it is in real life haha), or I have to get the nail polish remover out.
So I found a way to create my own DIY nail swatches. In other words, I'm lazy and this is an easy way to trial my polishes when I can't decide which one to wear, hehehe.

How pro do these babies look? In reality, you'd probably only ever need these if you're a beauty blogger like myself, a nail polish hoarder (also like myself), or a nail artist.
But they're cute, serve their purpose really well and you can always use this as a technique for keeping plain fake nails steady as you paint them to later pop on your digits. And they take less than a minute each to make!
I figured I'd make good use of my new nail swatches and use them to review four new polishes. Read on for the reviews!

I barely ever wear nude nail polishes (read: never) because having a yellow undertone to my skin means that most nudes make my skin look sickly. But this nude is more of a brown, rather than a pink or beige, and I love the way it looks on! I actually painted all of my nails with this shade and am wearing it right now, and it looks really classy. It's definitely a great shade to wear at work. I also love that it's not a muted nude either; if you look closely it has a subtle hint of shimmer to it. Big thumbs (or all my fingers) up!
I've only recently begun wearing reds on my nails because I always saw it as the "grown ups'" colour. But I guess now that I'm officially a grown up (finished university yesterday!) I suppose red is going to become a little more regular on my nails. I like that this is almost a pastel red, not a blood or fire engine red. This lighter colour will be great for spring and summer because it's not as dramatic as those other, darker shades of classic red lacquer. I'm currently wearing this hue on my toes, so bring on sandal season!
If you've read my last post on the new Essence Me and My Ice Cream collection, then you'll already know that I'm not a big fan of green nail polish. Unless it's a really cool-toned, bright mint colour, green just doesn't suit me. I think this shade would look amazing on darker skin tones because it would really contrast and pop! I also like that this shade has a little bit of shimmer to it, which I haven't seen a green of this shade have before.

Christmas is only a couple of months away and I already know that I'll be breaking this baby out for the festive season! Most glitter polishes I've tried take many, many coats before it becomes opaque, so I love that this polish becomes pretty much solid glitter after only two coats. It'd also look amazing as a top coat over a coloured polish (I'm thinking black would look amazing for a starry sky kind of look!).

I like using a 3-free suspending base to make my own nail polish, but if you prefer using polishes that are 5-free or 8-free, you can use your favorite clear nail polish instead. This 16-free topcoatwould be a good choice.

Just keep in mind that regular clear polish may not suspend the colorants as well as a suspending base, so you’ll need to shake the polish a little bit longer before use.
You can use pretty much any oil-based or oil-dispersible cosmetic colorant to color your nail polish. Just make sure that whatever you are using is made for cosmetic use. Craft glitters, food dyes or other non-cosmetic colorants might not behave well in nail polish since they aren’t designed for that purpose.
My favorite colorants for nail polish are mineral micas. These powdered colorants provide shimmering color in a whole rainbow of shades.For brightcolored shades that are clear and glossy, look for oil-dispersible colorants like ultramarines and oxides.

Step One: Place the nail polish mixing balls into the empty polish bottles, and insert a miniature funnel into the bottle’s neck.
Step Two: Use the tip of a popsicle stick or a miniature scoop to add glitter or colorants to the funnel. You can stick to one color or create your own blends by mixing multiple colorants together.
Add a large pinch of color to make a sheer polish or as much as 1/4-1/2 teaspoon for a heavier, more opaque color.

Step Three: Gently tap the bottle and funnel to drop the colorant into the bottle. Be careful not to spill the colorants or get glitter everywhere. This part can be VERY messy!
Step Five: Shake. Shake. Shake. It will take a lot of effort to mix the polish for the first time. Shake the bottle for 30-60 seconds, or until the colors are well blended into the base.
Step Five: Apply to your nails! Be sure to use a good base coat and top coat along with your custom polish. This will help make the color last and show off your gorgeous custom polish its best.

It's an excellent way to get custom nail polish colors you couldn't get otherwise. And I love the way this nail polish goes on and the way it dries - it's much more matte and shimmery than regular nail polish.
P.S. Know there are lots of tutorials on how to make your own nail polish floating around online, but I really wanted to give it a try. :D Even sunshiine has one - make sure to check her instructable out!
Make Your Own Brand Of Gel Polish
I bought the cheapest stuff available at Walgreen's - Wet n Wild. The name is cringeworthy, but at a dollar each for the clear polishes and three dollars each for the eyeshadow compacts, it was a really good deal! And I am actually really impressed with how my nail polish turned out.
Pour a tiny bit of polish out of the bottles into/onto something you were throwing away anyway. I used a ziploc bag. You'll need extra room in the bottle for the eyeshadow or glitter you're adding.
In the picture, the polish on the left has had a little poured out, and the polish on the right is a full bottle.
Colour Creation Kit Create Your Own Nail Polish Colour
I folded a piece of printer paper twice so I ended up with fold lines to cut it into four smaller pieces and then used those to make my funnels.
Use a butter knife or whatever you like to scrape the eyeshadow from the compact and onto a piece of paper. Then chop the eyeshadow up - you don't want any big clumps, because those will be trickier to mix into the polish.
Unscrew the cap and wipe the excess polish off the brush and set it to the side on a scrap of paper so it doesn't ruin anything. :)
How To Apply Gel Nails At Home In 2022
Use the piece of paper you've chopped the eyeshadow up on to transfer the eyeshadow - just fold it in half and tip it into the funnel.
Tap the funnel to get the eyeshadow to fall down into the bottle. If the eyeshadow gets grumpy and starts to clump at the bottom of the funnel, use a toothpick to help push it through. This happened almost every time.
Try to be quick while doing this, otherwise the nail polish brush can dry out and you'll have to get the nail polish remover after it to clean it up.
